THE 39 miles of ancient fortified wall that stretched across Scotland to form the frontier of the Roman Empire has been given World Heritage Site status.

The Antonine Wall was awarded the prized honour by Unesco at a summit of the United Nations cultural body in Canada. It joins a host of renowned sites across the world , including the Great Wall of China and Stonehenge.
