Note that, decade after decade, fashion chains and make-up firms have frequently tried out their new lines on us, before going anywhere else in the UK, because they know we're ready to cut a dash, experiment, try anything once.

Not just dedicated followers of fashion, but also trendsetters, that's us - or so we like to think.

And it wasn't just clothes. It was buildings, bridges, furniture, paintings, and pottery.
