NEWS 1920: Prohibition began in the United States, with all sales of alcohol declared illegal. 1970: Colonel Muammar Gaddafi seized power in Libya after a coup. 1979: The Shah of Iran, below, fled his country amid violent protests against his regime. 1991: Operation Desert Storm was launched by a US-led force to free Kuwait from an Iraqi invasion. 2006: Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah announced they were expecting a child.

SPORT 1981: Boxer Leon Spinks was mugged by attackers who stole his gold teeth. 2001: Lennox Lewis was named Combat Sportsman of the Year. 2002: Derby County striker Fabrizio Ravanelli denied he would be taking over from sacked manager Colin Todd.
