NEWS 1934: The world's first launderette, the Washeteria, opened in Fort Worth, Texas. 1949: Eire proclaimed itself the Republic of Ireland. 1949: The first Boy Scout Bob-a-Job Week was launched. 1965: Fifty-six people were arrested in Brighton after Mods and Rockers clashed on the beach. 1968: The old London Bridge was sold to an American oil company and re-erected in Arizona.

SPORT 1999: Two 8ft pirates, five trees, a Lord Nelson and a couple who got married en route took part in the London Marathon. 2001: Karl Power, above, escaped a security cordon to pose on the pitch with Manchester United players ahead of their Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
