VIOLENT crime increased in west Scotland in the last 12 months and police still did not solve enough cases.

It showed Scotland's biggest force is struggling to cope with an onslaught of murders, knife crime and yob behaviour - fuelled overwhelmingly by alcohol and drugs.

In his final report before he retires in October, the Chief Constable blamed the widespread availability of cheap alcohol for much of the most serious violence.
