THERE was real tension on the starting grid and the pit lane was crammed with eager spectators as the 1953 Glasgow Green Soap-box Derby prepared for the off.
The home-made vehicles, driven by the lightest Cubs, Scouts and Sea Scouts their builders could find, had been lovingly knocked together in garages and community halls around the city.
