Another day, another dime. Scotland, predictably, failed to reach out a hand for the silver dollar at the weekend and, in the process, probably ended any chances they might have held of reaching the finals of the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

Any analysis of this performance leads to a conclusion determining what we already recognised: the manager is less than competent, probably an impostor, and the players are, at best, tradesmen who, by no fault of their own, have been elevated to a status they cannot embrace.
