Your editorial (April 28) was a fairly predictable response to the news that Scots workers have a high sickness absence rate. Ordinary Scots workers making a valuable contribution to society are actually malingerers who should be refused a sick note and put straight back to work.

However, if you care to look a bit closer, you will find a rather more obvious reason for the high sickness rates. Many employees regularly work 50, 60 even 70 hours a week in order to earn a decent living wage.
