Q I've just been reading your column in the Evening Times. In the last question about maintenance you say the ex-husband should pay until the child is 25 and I wondered if you could clarify something for me? I have two daughters from my first marriage and my ex has always managed to wangle paying very little for our daughters. Our eldest went to uni in Aberdeen two years ago when she was 17 and maintenance was stopped because she was no longer at home. Why should this be?

AYour daughter is the one entitled to maintenance, not you, if I am interpreting the issue correctly form your e-mail. Daughter going away from home is irrelevant to the father's obligation to pay, but it becomes a direct one between parent and child. She can sue him for support.
