ON JAILING the man who crashed his car into 18-month-old Melissa McInnes and killed her, Judge Lord Menzies pompously pronounced that "This is not a court of vengeance or a court of retribution. It is a court of law".

It's certainly not a court of justice when a child's life is deemed worthy of just three years in prison. What kind of message does this sentence send out to dangerous drivers? With judgments such as this, it's not surprising that a large number of the public have no faith whatsoever in the criminal justice system.
