NEWS 1927: Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party after a power struggle with Stalin. 1945: The International Monetary Fund was set up in Washington. 1965: Britain's first offshore oil-rig the Sea Gem capsized, killing 13 men. 1968: Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, returned safely to Earth after six days. 1975: The Equal Pay Act and the Sex Discrimination Act came into force. 2004: Officials in Ukraine declared opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko, below, the winner of presidential elections.

SPORT 1938: The first skimobile course opened in New Hampshire, USA. 1981: Australian Dennis Lillee dismissed Larry Gomes in Melbourne for his 310th Test wicket - a world record at the time.
