Spl in Plea for Gold to Stay On
SPL executive chairman Lex Gold has been asked to put retirement on hold until he helps sort out the Setanta cash crisis. All 12 SPL clubs met at Hampden Park yesterday to discuss the Irish broadcaster's plea to make changes to the GBP125m contract for live games between 2010 and 2014.
THE fact there is even any debate over it would surprise most. With 30 goals to his name this season, you would presume Kris Boyd would be the first name onWalter Smith's team-sheet this weekend. Just one point behind league leaders Celtic, Rangers need to emerge victorious from the final Old Firm showdown of the season to have control of their own destiny.
Top Six Rivals Entitled to Our Respect: Smith
WALTER SMITH today claimed it is disrespectful to the other top six sides to suggest the final Old Firm game of the season will decide the Scottish title. Smith's side can move two points clear at the top of the SPL with three games to go if they defeat Celtic at Ibrox tomorrow.
CELTIC have been rocked by another injury blow on the eve of tomorrow's Old Firm showdown at Ibrox. Already without skipper Stephen McManus following surgery yesterday on the captain's damaged knee, Lee Naylor is now a big doubt for the match after suffering an injury at Aberdeen last weekend.
Let Me Loose On Old Firm Rivals Lafferty in Plea to Smith Lafferty'sold Firmplea
KYLE LAFFERTY is desperate to start tomorrow's Old Firm title showdown at Ibrox. The Rangers front man only returned from a five-week injury lay- off last weekend when he came on as a late second-half substitute in the 2-0 victory over Hearts.
Injured Warrior Hobbles Out of Contention
GLASGOW WARRIORS openside flanker John Barclay will miss the last two games of the season. He fractured a bone in a foot in the defeat by Heineken Cup finalists Leinster last time out, having been hurt in an accidental clash with team-mate Dan Turner.
Gary On a Roll As He Picks Up Jags Gong
GARY HARKINS has been named as Partick Thistle's Player of the Year. The 24-year-old's 12-goal haul from midfi eld made him the Jags top scorer, and also played a key part in nailing down second place in the Irn-Bru First Division for his side.
Holms Looks to Build Confi Dence
QUEEN'S PARK midfielder Ryan Holms says his team must use their final Irn-Bru Division Two fixture at Stirling Albion tomorrow to take confidence into the relegation play-offs. Queen's will meet Stenhousemuir in the first leg of their play- off double-header next Wednesday.
Trouten Expects Quick Promotion
CLYDE midfield star Alan Trouten today backed the Bully Wee to make it back to Division One at the first time of asking after being relegated. The Broadwood side will look to end the season on a high at Dunfermline tomorrow, but the midfielder believes gaffer John Brown's side can bounce back immediately if he retains the nucleus of his squad.
Saints Out to Prove They're No Sinners . . .
ST MIRREN manager Gus MacPherson today demanded a massive reaction from his players to their disappointing defeat by Inverness when they host Motherwell tomorrow. The Buddies' 2-1 defeat to Caley Thistle saw them plunged deeper into the SPL relegation mire and they now sit just three points above bottomplaced Falkirk.
Star Stopper Out to Make a Mark
HAMILTON defender Mark McLaughlin says a win at Inverness on Sunday could secure Accies' SPL status. Bottom-placed Falkirk, who are at Kilmarnock tomorrow, trail Accies by six points with only three fixtures left when this weekend's card is completed.
Ex-Celt Ross in Play-Off Gamble
PRESTON boss Alan Irvine claims former Celtic youngster Ross Wallace is at the centre of a selection dilemma ahead of tonight's CocaCola Championship play-off semi-final firstleg clash with Sheffield United at Deepdale. Wallace was sent off after removing his shirt - it was his second caution - after he curled in a superb free-kick winner for Preston in the 2-1 success at Birmingham two weeks ago.
SCOTT McDONALD opens his mouth and pulls the trigger. The verbal volley which shoots out leaves you with some idea what it's like to be a goalkeeper when the Celtic striker is bearing down on goal. There is no way he is going to miss his target as the point is duly rammed home.
Hart's Beating Strongly for Gord to Make It Four in a Row
THE quality of any manager should never be gauged by his popularity in the dressing room as it is a poll which can be skewed by players not always a first pick in his side. So when a man who is left out as often as he is selected tells you Gordon Strachan is doing a terrific job which could be elevated to a fantastic one if he succeeds in clinching a fourth SPL title, he must be doing something right.
