A Tale of Two Movies with 'the New Cruz ' Andy Dougan's Movie World
SHE is being hailed by some as the new Penelope Cruz and Argentine beauty Mia Maestro certainly has a golden opportunity to show her versatility at the moment. The 27-year-old has two movies opening within a week. After starring in the big budget Poseidon last week, tomorrow she can be seen in the Latin thriller Secuestro Express.
THE summer of the remake continues. Last week we had Poseidon, in a week or two we'll have The Lake House and even next month's Superman Returns is a sort of remake of Superman III. As remakes go there seems to be little point in redoing The Omen. Unlike Poseidon it doesn't benefit especially from advances in effects technology. On the other hand it is 30 years since the first one and it's a good enough story to stand telling again.
LIEV SCHREIBER is full of apologies. He's spent several months making a new version of a classic horror thriller and he doesn't have a single story to tell about it. No nightmares while shooting - "I really wish that I had, it would have made this a lot easier" - and definitely no curse of The Omen.
Skye Festival Freebies the Isle of Skye Music Festival
HOW do you fancy a weekend music festival featuring KT Tunstall, Sparks, Mylo and Fun Lovin' Criminals topping the bill? And how much more attractive would it be if Kid Loco, Hi Karate, Optimo, Josh Wink, Ralph Lawson's 20 20 Soundsystem, Erol Alkan and a whole host of club favourites were also on the bill?
Eyes On the Prize Funky Foursome Bring Their Positive Vibe Back to Glasgow
IT is barely six months since Black Eyed Peas last played Glasgow, but the city's appetite for the hip hop stars is apparently insatiable, as they return to the SECC for another show on Monday. At the Carling Academy before Christmas, Will. i. am turned up the tartan charm offensive, taking the stage in a pair of plaid trousers and declaring: "Of all the places in the world, I love to play in Glasgow."
WITH a sold-out show at King Tut's planned for Sunday, teenage Paisley pop sensation Paolo Nutini is limbering up for a major assault on the charts this year by releasing a free download-only single to tantalise listeners. These Streets, available at www. paolonutini. com, precedes his first full single release on the Atlantic record label, Last Request, which follows in July.
LOGAN ARE ON A RUN GLASGOW hard rockers Logan launch their new single When I Get Down with a free show at HMV in Argyle Street on Monday at 5pm.
DESCRIBE THE BAND: Energetic, quirky singer-songwriter who escaped from acousticville and formed a rock band. Sounds like a rainbow in steel-toecapped boots. BASED? Glasgow's west end.
IT'S been a healthy summer for rockers so far, and with the long- awaited return of Maynard James Keenan's mighty Tool, the volume and the venom can only increase. With an intellect and imagination that could make Marilyn Manson hang up his corset and retire from his role as the panto dame of goth, LA-based Keenan has created a quartet that could cross your eyes and singe your retinas from the inside-out.
Sacramento Rockers Push the Boundaries
SINCE their formation in the early 90s, Sacramento metal band Deftones have proved themselves to be one of the most original and interesting bands in rock. Initially pidgeonholed into the nu-metal genre, the band have shaken the tag with their combination of innovative soundscapes and intelligent lyrics.
Funny Business Titter Ye Not! Bawdy Slave Comedy Is Roman in the Gloamin'
SCANTILY clad women, orgies, soon-to-be non-virgins and bawdy humour. Ooh, er, missus, you could be forgiven for thinking Up Pompeii! was being played out on stage. Based on the comedies of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus, and co-written by M*A*S*H* creator Larry Gelbart, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum tells the story of slave Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom.
Book a booth for the match WORLD Cup fever is hitting the Lansdowne. The west end bar is bringing in a 40" high-definition plasma screen for tomorrow night's kick-off of the world's biggest sports tournament.
