BOSSES at Glasgow's Caledonian University today warned they would be forced to cut jobs to pay for any lecturers' pay rise. Strathclyde University is looking at a recruitment freeze, while Glasgow may have to shelve plans to upgrade facilities, as the bitter row deepens.

Shopkeeper Saves Life of Man Stabbed in Street
A HERO shopkeeper saved the life of a stabbing victim left for dead outside a Glasgow theatre - where No Mean City is playing. The 22-year-old man was knifed repeatedly in a gang attack outside the Citizens Theatre, which is showing the play depicting Glasgow gang violence in the 1930s.
QUESTIONS have been raised in Holyrood over the case of a teenage murder suspect who was allowed to go on a family holiday while on bail. And, as revealed in later editions of the Evening Times yesterday, First Minister Jack McConnell announced that local prosecutors are to look into the matter.

Does a Pub Like This Really Need a Ban On Glass? Licensing Board Urged to Tone Down Its Policy
PUB bosses and business leaders today urged Glasgow licensing bosses to scrap plans for a blanket ban on glasses. From January all licensed premises in the city will have to serve drink in plastic or toughened glass, plastic bottles or aluminium cans.
Nightspot Rules Bring Drop in Attacks
JUST five glass attacks have been recorded in city centre nightspots since tough new rules came into force in January. And in two of the incidents injuries were kept to a minimum because the weapon used was made of toughened glass, which doesn't break into shards.

Left for Dead in Gang Knife Attack Horror Stabbing in Busy Street
AMAN was left for dead after being attacked by a knife gang in a busy Glasgow street. The 22-year-old was saved by a shopkeeper who used towels to stem the blood pouring from the victim's stab wounds. The store owner was talked through the emergency treatment over the phone by medical staff.
Riot Cops Called to Boxing Match
RIOT police were called to a Scottish boxer's title-winning fight after violence broke out among his own supporters. Trouble erupted after Kenny Anderson, from Kirkcaldy, fell behind in his battle with British Welterweight champion Young Muttley.
A MAJOR air and sea search was under way today for a fishing boat with two crew on board. Three coastguard rescue teams, a helicopter and RNLI lifeboat were involved in the search for the vessel.
