Times Past Linthouse, August 1953

BACK in the days when Clyde yards were responsible for building much of the world's shipping fleet, launching ceremonies were 10 a penny. In August 1953 it was the turn of the Patonga, built at Stephen's yard at Linthouse, to slip into the water. The ship, second from right, can be seen being towed to a mid-river mooring beside the Greek ship, Olympia.

A GLASGOW company has become the first private Scottish firm to be officially accredited for DNA profiling work The firm can now carry out forensic work in police investigations normally performed south of the border. Crucial Genetics, a spin-off company from the University of Glasgow, specialise in using DNA samples to carry out procedures including rapid paternity testing and tracing family bloodlines.
